- Fatherhood: Man's Highest Calling??
In the Book of Mormon, we have the account of Alma, the son of Alma, being numbered among the rebellious and doing all manner of iniquity. Alma the father prayed with much faith that his son would come to a knowledge of the truth—a prayer which was answered in a very special way:.
Alma, arise and stand forth, for why persecutest thou the church of God? For the Lord hath said: This is my church, and I will establish it; and nothing shall overthrow it, save it is the transgression of my people. Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore, for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith.
When Alma the Younger recovered from this experience, he was a changed man. Satan, in his carefully devised plan to destroy the family, seeks to diminish the role of fathers. Increased youth violence, youth crime, greater poverty and economic insecurity, and the failure of increasing numbers of children in our schools offer clear evidence of lack of a positive influence of fathers in the homes.
Surely we have learned by now, from the experience over centuries, that the basic family provides the most stable and secure foundation for society and is fundamental to the preparation of young people for their future responsibilities. We should have learned by now that alternate styles of family formations have not worked and never will work.
Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.
Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

Focusing on fathers, what does the Lord expect us to do? It has always been so; it always will be so. Father, with the assistance and counsel and encouragement of your eternal companion, you preside in the home. It is not a matter of whether you are most worthy or best qualified, but it is a matter of [divine] appointment.
A Father's Calling
You preside at family home evening; and as guided by the Spirit of the Lord, you see that your children are taught correct principles. It is your place to give direction relating to all of family life. You take an active part in establishing family rules and discipline. As a leader in your home you plan and sacrifice to achieve the blessing of a unified and happy family. To do all of this requires that you live a family-centered life.
As President Joseph F. Then, the home is what needs reforming. Try today, and tomorrow, to make a change in your home. Remember, brethren, that in your role as leader in the family, your wife is your companion. Maybe this Father's Day, dads should take a page from Jacob, and bless their children instead of receive blessings.
Serve instead of being served.
Love and be loved. Dads have the highest calling, so Every Man Ministries suggests taking this holiday to honor your children, and be honored in a humble manner. One way is to read them a blessing. A Father's Calling
As a father and a husband, I need only to look to my Savior as my greatest role model and source of inspiration in the pursuit of this goal. He gave His life for others and I'm called to do the same. While other priorities will rightfully take my time, my efforts and my resources, the priority to love my wife and children will remain one of my highest throughout my life. A question I ask myself on a regular basis: If I'm not taking care of the most important things, why am I so busy with everything else? In life, there are countless good things I can be doing. Yet, as a father God has given me the priority to love and lead my family in a manner that honors Him.
Meaning that God is first, my family and others are second and I am third. As a Christ-following husband and a father, this is my relational emphasis in life. I put others in front of me starting with my family. It will require me to say no to some good things in order to say yes to the most important ones.
This is my calling as a father. It is one of servanthood, commitment and leadership. Here's the RSS extension.
