As a member of the NG, I wanted to learn more about the Guard and it's history. This book was very helpful. If was a little dry and the author seemed to go off on rabbit travels at times. I found myself skipping pages due to this. If you're a WWII history buff you'd probably enjoy this book to some extent. One person found this helpful. On time as advertised no issues. I found it most interesting as my brother served as a scout with Headquarters 1st Battalion Infantry from joining the division in the states though their battle in the Hurtgen Forest where he was injured.

Guard Wars is an excellent contribution to our knowledge of how the National Guard delivered combat power in the Second World War. Mightily researched and carefully crafted, it provides a first class exposure of the challenges and complexities of generating a National Guard Division the 28th that was fit for overseas operations in Europe.

As an academic study, it has plenty of critical analysis, fuelled by material that has been mined from a variety of sources. It is therefore, not a racy read but requires, like any good meal, a pause between courses to ensure one obtains the best from it. Michael Weaver has done a fine job! He really loved reading about his unit.

It tells the story of the 28th From It talks about the problem that the 28th ID face in combat in hurtgen forest. The only problem with the book is the lack of detailed maps. Over all not a bad read. If you are a military history buff, and you are well versed in the terminology you will enjoy this.
